Twitter accounts run by football clubs don’t exactly have a reputation for churning out witticisms, but this exchange on social media between Roma and Bayern Munich has taken things to a new level.

The two clubs will meet in the Champions League tonight, with both sides looking to claim top spot in Group E.

Ahead of the clash in the Italian capital tonight, Roma’s official Twitter account send out a tweet recounting the last time the two sides met, asking: “Were you there?”

What ensued has to be the most light-hearted of light-hearted banter Twitter has ever seen.

“We were of course,” Bayern Munich’s Twitter account replied. “But we’re hoping for a different result. Expect a tough game!”

“Tough matches is what the UCL is all about!” Roma retorted. “Looking forward to the match today!”

Bayern replied they were looking forward to it too, rather peculiarly adding: “We’ll be bringing the likes of Gotze, Boateng and Bernat!”

A swift 13 minutes later, Roma added: “What they’ll be hearing at the packed Olimpico is FORZA ROMA!”

Bayern pointed out that they used to play in an Olympic stadium too – and Roma are yet to reply.
