Russia’s preparations for Euro 2016 have been hit following allegations that the country’s sports minister Vitaly Mutko covered up the failed drug test of a footballer in the country’s top flight.

The claims will be made in a documentary on German TV tonight by Hajo Seppelt, who uncovered widespread doping in Russian athletics.

But a spokesperson for the ministry of sport said: “We firmly reject the allegation.”

"We have agreed a road-map with WADA under which the testing of Russian athletes is carried out in full by UK Anti-Doping (UKAD), who were selected by WADA as RUSADA's main partner," the Russian statement continued.

"Samples are taken by foreign companies and analysed at accredited laboratories abroad.

"To control RUSADA's reform process, two independent experts nominated by WADA are currently leading their work.

"These efforts are fully supported by the state, and are aimed at ensuring the independence and transparency of anti-doping controls in Russia.

"In addition, we fully support the recommendations of the IAAF's expert group. Every Russian athlete will be subject to three additional doping tests by the IAAF."
