Toshack to stick with Danny Gabbidon

11 April 2012

Wales boss John Toshack defended Danny Gabbidon after the West Ham defender suffered a nightmare return to international football during a 2-1 defeat against Montenegro.

Gabbidon, who has just returned to full fitness following a lengthy lay-off, conceded a penalty that was converted by Stevan Jovetic.

He was then caught out by Simon Vukcevic's pass and Radomir Djalovic finished superbly. Sam Vokes scored from a Sam Ricketts cross to reduce the deficit in Podgorica.

Toshack said: "I have no problem with Gabbidon. He has been out for almost two years with injuries, it was just good to see him back."

Northern Ireland warmed up for their upcoming World Cup qualifiers with a 1-1 draw with Israel.

Grant McCann curled in a free-kick in the 18th minute before Elyaniv Barda levelled eight minutes later.

Spain came back from two goals down to beat Macedonia.

Fernando Torres struck for the Spaniards while his Liverpool team-mate Albert Riera sealed a 3-2 victory.

Under-fire Argentina coach Diego Maradona was given some breathing space with a 3-2 win over Russia.
