Winning goal: Gylfi Sigurdsson celebrates the goal which sunk United at Old Trafford
Standard Sport16 November 2014

Swansea City coach Alan Curtis believes Tottenham failed to get the best out of Gylfi Sigurdsson during his time at White Hart Lane.

The Iceland international returned to the Welsh side in the summer as Spurs deemed the midfielder surplus to requirements.

But Sigurdsson has been a revelation for the Swans, scoring twice and supplying seven assists in the Premier League already this season, while Spurs have struggled under new manager Mauricio Pochettino.

“He’s come to familiar surroundings and is very central to the way we play,” Curtis told Talksport.

“We play him in that no.10 shirt and I’m not sure Spurs used him to the best of his strengths, but he’s been terrific for us, not only for his ability on the ball, but he works extremely hard as well.”

Having scored in the victory at Old Trafford on the opening day of the season, Sigurdsson unleashed an unstoppable free-kick in the comeback win over Arsenal earlier this month, and Curtis insists it is just rewards for the work the midfielder puts in on the training ground.

“The free-kick was testament to the work he puts in after training,” Curtis continued.

“As soon as we finish you’ve got to drag him off the training ground, he’s forever practising those type of free-kicks.”

Sigurdsson made 58 appearances for Spurs, scoring eight times.
