Benfica are confident they will sign former Tottenham defender Jan Vertonghen.

The 33-year-old left Spurs last month after eight years and over 300 appearances, with a desire for a new challenge and to learn a new language in a new country.

Roma, Inter Milan and Napoli in Italy and former club Ajax were all linked with interest but it the Portuguese giants are closing in on the free transfer.

Vertoghen will undergo a medical on Thursday before signing a three-year deal.

Benfica finished second in the Portuguese Primeira Liga last season, five points ahead winners Porto, and will require a qualifier to reach the Champions League group stage.

Tottenham have already replaced Vertonghen's no.5 shirt with the signing of Pierre-Emile Hojgjerg from Southampton, with the Belgian reacting to the news.

"This looks sooo weird!!" he wrote via his official Twitter account, quote-tweeting Spurs' image of Hojbjerg's name on the shirt.
