Erik Lamela hit the post just before the hour mark but it was the visitors who scored the second goal of the game when Dawson made amends for his own goal with a powerful header.
The atmosphere changed at White Hart Lane almost immediately and Spurs failed to kick on and claim a second goal as Tony Pulis's side stood firm.
