Gary Neville has hailed Tottenham for their "outstanding performance" this season despite all the challenges they have faced so far.

Spurs manager Mauricio Pochettino often laments the ‘circumstances’ he and his squad have faced this term having struggled against a lack of investment, an injury-hit squad and the persistent distraction of delays at the new stadium.

Despite that, Tottenham remain five points off the Premier League’s top two and will close the gap to Manchester City to just two points should they win their game in hand away to Burnley.

The focus for now in north London is on Borussia Dortmund and the Champions League this week before the title run in, but Neville says they deserve great credit already.

"It was a bit of a struggle for Tottenham against Leicester on Sunday,” Neville told Sky Sports.

“They got the late goal which flattered them a bit, but with the injuries they have got and the challenges they have got it's such an outstanding performance from the players and Mauricio Pochettino to be where they are.

"Tottenham will be two points behind Manchester City if they win their game in hand, which is incredible with no money spent.

“Look at the depth of the City squad and the riches of the squad, then you think what Mauricio Pochettino is achieving with a squad that hasn't had any investment in the last 18 months. They deserve great credit."

"People talk about this squad but my players are heroes. What happens happens at the end of the season, they are going to be remembered."

Mauricio Pochettino on his squad's efforts

The former Manchester United defender was echoing the comments of Pochettino following the 3-1 win over Leicester, who hailed his players as heroes whether they claim any silverware or not this season, but feels Manchester City are now the favourites over both Spurs and Liverpool.

He added: "If you look at the size of Liverpool and the fact they haven't won the title in so long, there is an air of desperation at the club to win the title.

“A few weeks ago they were seven points clear and when Manchester City lost at Newcastle you thought it was there - what an opportunity for Liverpool that was. They still have that chance, but it has become a lot more difficult in the last week."

Tottenham still have to travel to both Liverpool and Manchester City before the end of the season.
