Tottenham's rivalry with Chelsea is at "the same level" as the north London derby, according to Jan Vertonghen.
Spurs' historical rivals are Arsenal, with both teams occupying north London since the Gunners' switch from Woolwich in 1913.
Clashes against Arsenal have often been heralded as the most important fixture on Tottenham's calendar but Chelsea have emerged as a new power during the modern era.
Mauricio Pochettino's side have been involved in several feisty encounters with the west Londoners in recent years, including last season's 2-2 draw at Stamford Bridge, which resulted in hefty fines for both clubs.
The latest installment in the rivalry is set to take place on Wednesday night and Vertonghen believes facing Chelsea is equally important as taking on Arsenal.
"For me it's at the same level. They've [Chelsea] done so well in the last 10-15 years and they're right up there," he told Sky Sports.
"Especially this season they're the team to beat. And I know a couple of guys there so that it always makes it a bit more interesting."
Chelsea endured a disastrous title defence last season, finishing in 10th place, while Spurs secured a Champions League place after securing third spot.
But Antonio Conte has given the Blues a new lease of life and Vertonghen has admitted Chelsea, who have won 13 consecutive top-flight fixtures, are almost unrecognisable.
"[They're] Totally different. I can't really remember the Chelsea team from last year if you see this team.
"If you see how they play, how many goals they score and how many goals they don't concede. They're just a very strong team and it looks like the team to beat this year," added Vertonghen.
