Tottenham defender Jan Vertonghen believes he is back to his best after finally making a full recovery from a long-term ankle injury.

Vertonghen struggled with ankle problems for over a year after first sustaining a strain during pre-season in 2013.

The Belgium international became more of a fringe member of the squad and was linked with a move away from White Hart Lane as he struggled to find his best form.

But Vertonghen has started every League game for Spurs this season and reveals his ankle woes are now a thing of the past.

He said: "The injury has been very difficult. I came back from the last World Cup with another ankle injury, so I had four in one season.

"It has been hard to get back on track. The most important thing is to feel free in whatever you do and that is what I'm trying to do now.

"Fitness is the most important thing in football and the rest will take care of itself. I just try to do my exercises and I get treatment at the right times so I feel free on the pitch."
