Tottenham have confirmed Kieran Trippier has suffered "minor ligament damage" and is expected to face only a short recovery period.

Trippier is Mauricio Pochettino's only recognised right-back in the first team following Kyle Walker's £50million move to Manchester City.

A recovery time has been reported as just two weeks, meaning the away opener at Newcastle United, before the Wembley 'home' game against Chelsea and Burnley.

A realistic return date is understood to be the September 9 trip to Everton.

Eric Dier is expected to deputise as Tottenham begin the Premier League campaign away at St James' Park, with Kyle Walker-Peters deemed not ready to be thrown into the action.

Tottenham announced their squad numbers for the new campaign on Thursday, with Trippier taking the No.2 vacated by Walker's exit.

Trippier joins Danny Rose - who on Friday issued a public apology for his recent comments against the club - and Erik Lamela on the sidelines.

Victor Wanyama and Heung-min Son are back in training but Sunday's game is expected to come too soon.
