Arsenal legend Ian Wright at pains to admit he would sign for Tottenham over the Gunners if he was still playing

Arsenal legend Ian Wright has begrudgingly admitted that players would now choose to join Tottenham over the Gunners.

Spurs ensured that they would finish above Arsenal for the first time in 22 years by defeating their north London rivals 2-0 on Sunday.

And working on BBC’s Match of the Day 2 program alongside former Tottenham midfielder, and Standard Sport columnist Danny Murphy, presenter Mark Chapman posed this hypothetical question:

“If you were both 23, 24 this summer – about to go into the prime of your career – and both Arsenal and Spurs make a bid for you and they’ll pay you exactly the same amount of money, who would you sign for?”

While Murphy instantly answered “you’d go to Spurs all day long”, Wright was somewhat hesitant.

“That’s a really tough question...It’s a loaded question,” he laughed. “…It’s unfair, on live television with my club on the floor and Tottenham flying. I’m not going to say the answer.

But the former striker, who scored 185 goals in 288 appearances for the Gunners, eventually did.

“To be totally honest…of course right now you’re going to sign for Spurs because the problem Arsenal have is the longer they don’t sort out what’s going on upstairs we are no longer going to be able to attract that player because he is going to go to another club.”
