Watford have been boosted by Danny Welbeck's return to light training.

The striker, who moved to Vicarage Road from Arsenal on a free transfer in the summer, has been out of action since October with a hamstring injury.

Prior to that, Welbeck had been beginning to look back to his best after appearing in five Premier League matches.

The 29-year-old’s progress was halted by injury, but he is now looking to return.

That is good news for Watford, who are still battling at the foot of the table despite winning three of their last four League games.

Welbeck’s return will bolster new boss Nigel Pearson’s attacking options and if the club are to add to their squad during the transfer window, it will likely be in defence.

Watford are exploring the possibility of bringing in a centre-back, with Barcelona youngster Jean-Clair Todibo and Amiens captain Prince Gouano floated as possible targets.

Left-back is another area that could be strengthened either now or in the summer as 35-year-old Jose Holebas’ deal expires at the end of the season.

AC Milan full-back Ricardo Rodriguez is available, but French side Lyon are at the front of the queue to sign him.

Watford may also opt against bringing in a left-back now given Kiko Femenia’s impressive form since Pearson was appointed.

The Spaniard usually plays on the right, but has shone on the opposite side.
