Wayne Rooney admitted that Manchester United needed the extra 10-minute break they got when the Braga floodlights failed in order to claim a 3-1 win which secured their place in the last 16 of the Champions League.

“We knew we had to improve after going one down so the manager gave us some instructions during those 10 minutes,” said the striker after his side had scored three times in the final 12 minutes to win in Portugal.

“We got the win but we know we can play better,” Rooney added. “At times, we were too slow. I don’t know why that was. We had plenty of possession but maybe we needed a bit more movement and speed to our play.

“We’re in a good position. Now we have a run of games where we feel we can get maximum points, so hopefully we can do that.”

Mike Phelan, United’s assistant manager said: “It was important that we got the job done as quickly as possible in order for us to be able to concentrate on the Premier League.”
