West Ham are second best in Stephen Warnock race

Sam Allardyce today admitted that West Ham have failed in their attempt to sign left-back Stephen Warnock from Aston Villa.

Warnock (above) was expected to join following a medical but Allardyce said: “The player was on his way down but it appears he received a phone call from a Championship club who made him a better, long-term offer.”

Warnock, 31, is now expected to join Leeds but Allardyce has not yet given up on signing a left-back before Thursday’s transfer deadline and could make another bid for Blackburn’s Martin Olsson.

Striker Andy Carroll, who has been out with a knee injury since November, could be in the squad for tomorrow’s game at Fulham.
