West Ham will not rush into offering left-back Aaron Cresswell a new contract despite reported interest from Manchester City.

Cresswell has enjoyed a successful first season in the Premier League following last summer’s £4million move from Ipswich.

His consistently high level of performances has attracted interest from some of the top clubs in the country, including City, while the England coach Roy Hodgson has also watched the defender in action recently.

The 25-year-old, who began his career at Tranmere, has four years left on his contract and West Ham have no plans to offer him a new deal at present.

However, other players who could be offered new contracts soon include striker Diafra Sakho and central defender James Collins.

Alex Song, meanwhile, on a season-long loan from Barcelona, has explained why he stayed behind when the rest of the senior squad went to Dubai on a training camp for five days.

“I think it was really good for me to work on my fitness and stay here,” he said. “I needed to work because I didn’t have a proper pre-season.

“When I was playing, I was feeling a little tightness in my muscles and that’s why I asked if I could stay here and work a little bit harder.”
