West Ham manager Manuel Pellegrini will be cautious with Jack Wilshere’s comeback from his latest ankle injury.

Wilshere has been out since the start of December but he stepped up his recovery last week when he trained with the Under-23s.

The midfielder is now targeting a return for to first-team action before the end of the season.

But Pellegrini will not rush him back to play in the remaining seven games.

Wilshere had surgery in September but after he returned for five minutes as a substitute against Newcastle on December 1, he broke down again.

The former Arsenal midfielder has made just four starts since joining West Ham last summer. He said: “It has been great to get on the pitch.

“You cannot really get that match fitness just from running. You need to be around players. Hopefully in the near future I will be involved in the first team.”
