Wigan v Arsenal - player ratings

Standard Sport assesses the individual Arsenal performances from their 1-1 draw with Wigan at Wembley (Arsenal won 4-2 on penalties).

The Gunners went into the tie as strong favourites to overcome last year's winners.

But their hopes of a first piece of silverware since 2005 were in serious doubt when Jordi Gomez converted a second-half penalty, after Per Mertesacker blatantly tripped Callum McManaman inside his own 18-yard box.

Arsenal rallied but it appeared their luck had run out when first Bacary Sagna hit the woodwork, before Kieran Gibbs saw his header brilliantly saved by Scott Carson in the final 10 minutes.

Arsene Wenger's men, however, did have a response as Mertesacker stooped his head to convert a scrappy goal and lift the tension off the Red side of Wembley.

And Arsenal eventually progressed past the steely Championship outfit on penalties. Lukasz Fabianski saved well twice in the shootout, offering Santi Cazorla the chance to send the Gunners to the final. The Spaniard made no mistake.
