The FA today launched a bid to stage the Women’s Euro 2021 tournament in England.

Uefa are set to decide the host nation at a meeting of their executive committee on December 3, with Austria and Hungary among the countries expected to have submitted bids prior to Friday’s deadline.

The FA wants to capitalise on growing interest in the women’s game with the national team generating a peak TV audience of 4million viewers during the run to the semi-finals of Euro 2017.

Two of the nine proposed venues are in London — Wembley and Brentford’s Community Stadium — while other sites include Milton Keynes, Sheffield United’s Bramall Lane, Brighton, and Manchester City’s Academy Stadium.

Mayor of London Sadiq Khan told Standard Sport: “London is the sporting capital of the world and we stand ready to host UEFA Women’s Euro 2021 matches, including the final, in our city.

“We’re hosting the final of the men’s tournament in 2020, so it would be fitting that Wembley stages the final of the women’s tournament, too. The Lionesses’ excellent performances in Euro 2017 and the SheBelieves Cup were truly inspirational, and I have no doubt Londoners and fans across the country will come together in record numbers to cheer them on.”

England staged the Women’s Euro 2005 in the north-west.
