England captain Harry Kane may have returned home as a hero on Sunday afternoon having won the Golden Boot in Russia, but there weren’t too many of his fans in Moscow.
Following France’s 4-2 win over Croatia in the final, individual awards were presented before Les Blues got their hands on the trophy, Kylian Mbappe and Luka Modric collected the Young Player and Player of the Tournament awards respectively.
However, when Kane was announced as the Golden Boot winner having scored six across the tournament, two more than his closest rivals, boos rang around the Luzhniki Stadium.
The Tottenham striker has overcome a lot of hurdles and broken plenty of barriers in the last couple of years, but has one more he’s keen to get past come the start of the new season; scoring in August.
"I'll hopefully be back for the first game and hopefully I can try and score in August this year," he said.
"Not many people get to say they've won a golden boot in a World Cup, it's a big achievement.
"I said before coming into the tournament I wanted to prove I could do it in these big tournaments.
"The Euros (in 2016) was disappointing for me and if anything I wanted to prove to myself I could score at this level. I've scored at every other level and it was important I did that. I'm extremely proud.
