The president of South Africa Jacob Zuma has lauded the World Cup team even though the host nation is out the tournament.

A 2-1 victory against France yesterday at the Free State Stadium was not enough to see them advance to the last 16.

Goals from Bongani Khumalo and Katlego Mphela in their final group A match gave the side the edge against the former world champions.

However, Uruguay and Mexico advance while France are due to return to Paris today.

Zuma told the players: "You have made your country proud. The existing carnival atmosphere in the country is because you have represented all of us with pride.

"Winning against France is an achievement you should be proud off. In tournaments like this sometimes you win and sometimes you lose. You gave it your best and now it is time to enjoy the World Cup.

"We have built a solid foundation for future tournaments and you can count on the country's support all the way."

It is also the end of the road for veteran Brazilian boss Carlos Alberto Parreira with the governing body about to appoint a South African coach.

SAFA president Kirsten Nematandani said: "We wish to thank the coach, the technical team together with the players for thier efforts.

"It is imperative we continue to be great hosts and rally behind the remaining teams. The humanity of Africa has already touched the whole world."
