Gayle gets one-day nod

12 April 2012

Chris Gayle will lead West Indies' one-day campaign against England, with current Test captain Daren Ganga not selected for the 14-man squad.

Opener Gayle has captained the Windies just once before, in a Twenty20 match against India in Cuttack.

The tourists will play two 20-over contests and three limited-overs internationals before heading home.

Although the selectors nominated Gayle as captain last week, the executive committee of the West Indies board vetoed the proposal, with Ganga appearing the favoured choice.

But Ganga, 28, has played only two ODIs in 15 months and only a handful more in the past five years, and once again failed to make the squad.

With permanent captain Ramnaresh Sarwan still sidelined with a shoulder injury, Shivnarine Chanderpaul steps into the vice-captain's role.

Antigua batsman Austin Richards is a surprise call-up, while World Cup players Dwayne Smith and Lendl Simmons are also included.

However, pacemen Corey Collymore and Jerome Taylor have missed out despite being first-choice Test picks.
