Gibbs thrilled by donation

12 April 2012

South Africa batsman Herschelle Gibbs is thrilled that his historic feat will help combat global poverty.

Gibbs became the first player ever to hit six sixes in a one-day international over as South Africa beat the Netherlands by 221 runs.

World Cup sponsors Johnnie Walker will donate one million US dollars to Habitat for Humanity, a charity which campaigns against poverty around the world, and Gibbs said: "It's great to see that my efforts will make a difference. I sincerely hope that some of the funds from this donation will assist poverty-stricken people in South Africa."

Cricket South Africa chief executive Gerald Majola said: "Herschelle Gibbs' record-breaking display is an enormous boost to the confidence of the Proteas at the start of their World Cup campaign.

"It is an added bonus that Gibbs' knock will make a meaningful contribution to the eradication of poverty."
