Goosen has Els in his sights

13 April 2012

Retief Goosen boosted his chances of retaining his crown as European No 1 with a superb opening round in the Linde German Masters in Cologne.

Goosen is second in the Order of Merit, trailing fellow South African Ernie Els by just over £300,000.

He made the ideal start today with a seven-under par 65.

That left Goosen top of the leaderboard alongside Australia's Stephen Leaney, who still had three holes to play.

England's Nick Dougherty and Gary Evans plus Swede Robert Karlsson were two shots further back.
