Great World Cup moments No9

Germans accused in carve-up row

Allegations of match-fixing have dogged football for years, so it's no surprise the World Cup has been caught in the controversy. And among the games to arouse suspicion was the 1982 clash between West Germany and Austria in Spain.

After their humiliating defeat to Algeria, West Germany went into their last match of the first round having to win. And if Austria avoided a four-goal loss they would also go through.

West Germany scored through Horst Hrubesch and then neither side had a serious shot for the next 79 minutes as they both survived at the expense of the Africans.

Algerian Soccer Federation president Benali Sekkal branded the match "scandalous and immoral" but his pleas to FIFA for the two countries to be kicked out of the finals failed.
