Hamilton horror at hearing: You're out of title running

13 April 2012

Lewis Hamilton has relived the moment he was told the Formula One spying row had cost him his world title challenge.

Hamilton, 22, was given the misinformation after arriving in Spa before the weekend's Belgian Grand Prix, where he finished fourth.

Hamilton was given the false information his title challenge was over

He said: 'I was walking the track with my engineer and I had a call to say that this is what they have said in the Press. My heart just dropped to think that all the work that the team have done and that I have put in this season was going to be taken away from me.'

Hamilton was relieved to learn that he was the victim of a misleading internet report, reproduced on electronic media around the world.

He heard the actual verdict later that evening, when McLaren were fined £50million and expelled from the constructors' championship.

Drivers' championship leader Hamilton and team-mate Fernando Alonso, who is two points behind with three races remaining, were excused punishment.
