Idowu has to settle for silver

Phillips Idowu had to settle for silver in the triple jump of the World Athletics Championships in Daegu despite twice recording a season's best effort.

Moments after Mo Farah took gold in the men's 5,000metres, it looked like Britain would claim another gold when, Idowu jumped a season's best 17.70m to restore a healthy lead.

However, American Christian Taylor then produced a stunning leap of 17.96m to take the lead and relegate Idowu to the silver medal position.

Idowu responded with an improvement to 17.77m, but then only had two rounds remaining to smash his personal best by more than 15cm to retain his title.

He was unable to produce anything better in the last two rounds and had to settle for silver, his 17.77m the best jump in world championship history not to win gold.
