India hopes are dashed

13 April 2012

Nigeria weightlifter Augustina Nwaokolo won the first gold medal at the Commonwealth Games today.

The 17-year-old dashed the hopes of home favourite Soniya Chanu when claiming victory in the 48kg category.

In doing so, Nwaokolo set Games records in both the snatch and clean and jerk for a total of 175kg.

India's Chanu had to settle for silver with 167kg ahead of compatriot Sandhya Rani Devi, who managed a combined total of 165kg.

Meanwhile, England's elite boxers narrowly avoided being made to shed unnecessary extra kilograms as the pre-event weigh-in at the Talkatora Stadium descended into farce today.

Problems with the scales led to the preliminaries being scrapped - but only after some of those who weighed in early had been ordered to sweat off weight they did not have to lose.

England head coach Rob McCracken said: "We hope the scales are properly calibrated tomorrow."
