Italy celebrate historic win

12 April 2012

Italy claimed their first victory away from home in the RBS 6 Nations when they defeated Scotland 37-17 at Murrayfield.

Tries from Mauro Bergamasco, Andrea Scanavacca and Kaine Robertson in the first six minutes handed Pierre Berbizier's side an astonishing 21-0 lead.

Scotland hit back with tries from Rob Dewey and captain Chris Paterson but a late try from Alessandro Troncon made sure of the historic win for Italy.

Sergio Parisse, who was outstanding for Italy, said afterwards: "We have deserved this win.

"We proved that this team never gives up. We have given our hearts and this win is the reward for our efforts.

"I think a new Six Nations tournament begins for us now."

Mirco Bergamasco, who turned 24 on Friday, added: "I couldn't have asked for a better birthday present than this.

"This is a great victory for us - to have won our first (Six Nations) game away from home is an incredible feeling.

"Alessandro Troncon has had a great game and we've shown a lot of determination and quality against Scotland."
