Jewell lays down gauntlet to Chimbonda

14 April 2012

Pascal Chimbonda has been told he still has a future with Wigan - but only if he has the "right attitude".

Manager Paul Jewell is furious the France World Cup squad member suggested his dream switch to Tottenham had been shackled because of a high transfer fee.

Wigan placed a £6million price tag on his head after Chimbonda stunned the club on the last day of the season by demanding a move, but Jewell is keen to put the matter to bed and said: "If Pascal has the right attitude, he is still part of my squad and part of my plans."

"But that is down to Pascal. To be quite frank, I have had enough of this now," he added.

"There is so much good news and positive stuff about Wigan ahead of the forthcoming season but all we seem to be talking about is this issue with one player."

The feel-good factor was emphasised with Wigan confirming they have agreed a deal to sign Ecuador midfielder Luis Antonio Valencia on a year-long loan from Spanish club Villarreal.

Valencia, 21, featured in this summer's World Cup, including the 1-0 second-round loss to England.

Valencia, who can play in the centre or on the right, joined Villarreal last year but had a spell on loan with Recreativo Huelva.

Jewell told the club's official website, www.wiganlatics.co.uk: "Antonio is something new for Wigan.

"As with most South Americans, he has skill in abundance and combines it with electric pace and a very high work-rate. He has played in Europe for a season, and I'm convinced he has the attributes to make a success of the Premiership."
