Jimenez to fly out on high note

14 April 2012

Miguel Angel Jimenez will travel to the US Open at Pinehurst in high spirits next weekend after claiming his sixth European Tour title in 16 months.

Jimenez won the Wales Open, firing a final-round 62 to pocket the £250,000 first prize at Celtic Manor.

His 14-under-par total left him four shots clear of Sweden's Martin Erlandsson and fellow Spaniard Jose Manuel Lara.

"I am looking forward to having a rest and then fly out to the US Open," the Ryder Cup star said. In contrast, next year's European team captain Ian Woosnam was in a dark mood after finishing joint fifth. He went into the final round one shot off the lead and said: "I am going to chuck the clubs away for a few weeks."
