'Jose can conquer Europe'

John Terry today backed Jose Mourinho to cap a remarkable first season in England by winning the European Cup.

The Chelsea captain was last night named the Professional Footballers' Association's player of the year, as first revealed by Standard Sport on Friday, but is already eyeing more illustrious prizes.

Mourinho's side can be crowned champions tonight if Arsenal fail to beat Tottenham at Highbury.

Despite the manager's claim that he wants Arsenal to win to allow him the chance to claim the title by beating Bolton on Saturday, Chelsea's players will watch the match together at Stamford Bridge and cheer on Spurs.

But Terry is now looking ahead to victory in Europe. Chelsea face Liverpool in a semi-final first leg on Wednesday and Terry believes their manager will give them the edge.

He said: "Winning the Champions League again would be very special for the manager. It would be great for him to win it in consecutive seasons, after doing so well at Porto.

"We've got a long way to go but we've got a chance. If anyone can do it, it's our manager.

"It will be a tough game against Liverpool. They're very good defensively, similar to us. But hopefully we'll get a two-goal cushion at Stamford Bridge and win the tie up there. I'm sure we can break them down."

Chelsea dominated the awards at the Grosvenor House hotel, with four players in the team of the year and Frank Lampard being runner-up for player of the year, as he was last season.

Terry dedicated his trophy to his team-mates. He said: "I'm the speaker on the pitch but everybody deserves credit. It's not only me, and the lads have been fantastic all season."
