Keothavong progresses to last eight in Auckland

Andrew Hodgson13 April 2012

Anne Keothavong knocked out Spanish eighth seed Carla Suarez Navarro 6-2, 6-4 in the second round of the ASB Classic in Auckland today.

Britain's No1 is at a careerhigh 60 in the rankings and hopes to break in the top 50 this year.

Keothavong showed that goal is realistic with an impressive display against a player who is No46 in the world.

She will face Ayumi Morita in the quarter-finals after the Japanese qualifier pulled off a surprise 7-5 6-2 win over fourth seed Aleksandra Wozniak of Canada.

Keothavong beat the world No83 in their only meeting, triumphing in straight sets in qualifying for the 2007 French Open.

Top seeds Elena Dementieva and Caroline Wozniacki both won with the Russian beating New Zealand's Marina Erakovic 6-2, 6-3, while Denmark's Wozniacki saw off American Jill Craybas 6-4, 7-5.
