Lancashire may move out of Old Trafford

14 April 2012

Lancashire announced today they are considering moving away from Old Trafford to a purpose-built stadium next to Manchester City's football ground.

The county are contemplating relocating to a 30,000 state-of-the-art site on the east side of the city.

The new site - which would be nearly double the capacity of their present home - would be next to the City of Manchester stadium, where the Commonwealth Games were held and where City now play.

Manchester City Council initiated the move to the district to build on the success of the Games.

Test cricket was first played at Old Trafford in 1884 but Lancashire have been threatened with losing international matches after poor attendances in recent years.

In a statement today, the county stressed that discussions are "at the earliest stage".
