Late surge clinches title for Hoy

Chris Hoy dug out his best British performance to see off up-and-coming French rider Francois Pervis and claim the kilometre World Cup title in Manchester on Friday night.

The 30-year-old had trailed Pervis going into the final 250 metres but produced a surge of power to finish in one minute 1.5 seconds - his fastest competitive time on a British track.

"I was sort of aware I was down as I didn't hear as much noise from the crowd as I had at the start," Hoy said. "But in this event you can only be down by a small fraction so you can always get back."
