Magnier protest allowed

Manchester United fans will be allowed to stage a protest against John Magnier and JP McManus at next month's Cheltenham Festival.

The supporters' group United4Action have been given permission to hold their demonstration 'within racecourse property' on Cheltenham Gold Cup day on 18 March.

The precise location is yet to be announced, but Cheltenham managing director Edward Gillespie said: 'I have somewhere in mind, but that is something for me to discuss with them. The reason we have suggested that is as much for public safety and for trying to maximise the efficient running of the race meeting.'

Gillespie has also called for a meeting with the fans' group and local police to discuss their plans. Set up by former groom Sean Murphy, United4Action oppose the Irish billionaires' financial invlovement at Old Trafford where they hold a 28 per cent stake.

They have targeted the Festival to highlight their concerns and have previously promised a 'peaceful and responsible' protest either inside or outside the track.

A United4Action spokesman said: 'We have been offered the chance to protest within 'racecourse property'. This offer is very much appreciated and and will be considered.' United chief executive David Gill has criticised the supporters' plans, saying: 'While the board understands the concern of the fans, it cannot condone any disruptive activity.'

Meanwhile, there were further warnings today about a criminal gang plotting to disrupt Festival betting by targeting internet bookmakers.

The gang - believed to operate from Eastern Europe - have threatened acts of cyber terrorism which will paralyse firms' computer systems unless they are paid off.

Skybet, Sporting Index and Betdaq are the latest betting companies to admit they have received blackmail threats following on from Paddy Power, Blue Square and Coral.
