Magpies seek cure for Owen hamstring

12 April 2012

Newcastle manager Glenn Roeder has revealed that the same man who helped injury-plagued midfielder Kieron Dyer win a long battle back to full fitness is now assisting England striker Michael Owen's recovery from his World Cup agony.

Owen has expressed hopes of returning to action before the end of the season despite damaging cruciate knee ligaments in the summer and Roeder believes the same medical care which eventually put Dyer back on the pitch will help Owen.

Roeder said: "We flew a guy up from London three times a week to work with Kieron over a five-month spell from the end of last season and the same guy is now working with Michael."

He added: "A big problem with Kieron was his hamstrings and while Michael is having rehab on the knee, making sure that it is perfect, it is also an opportunity for him to look at the hamstring problems he has had over a number of years.

"He has seen that Kieron is now accelerating without giving a second thought to the hamstring going and after Michael saw a specialist in Bristol last week we are now confident we can get him back to the way he was (at Liverpool) before all his own hamstring problems."
