Martyn leaves Leeds for Everton

14 April 2012

Former England goalkeeper Nigel Martyn has joined Everton from Premiership rivals Leeds.

Martyn, who won 23 international caps, was overtaken in the Elland Road pecking order by Paul Robinson last season.

He was previously linked with a move to big-spending Chelsea but did not want to uproot his family and the move across the Pennines proved much more attractive.

The club has two young goalkeepers in Danny Milosevic and Scott Carson waiting in the wings to become Robinson's understudy and manager Peter Reid admitted it was only fair to allow Martyn to move on.

"He's in the last year of his deal and he has been a fantastic servant to this club," said Reid.

"We've got young goalkeepers - that's one of the reasons for letting him go. But the other is as a thank you for being so patient.

"He is a top professional and deserves a first team place somewhere."

Meanwhile, Everton's second approach today for young Scottish James McFadden appears to have paid off after Motherwell agreed a deal allowing the striker to move to Goodison Park.

Everton officials made an offer for the 20-year-old, who has scored 32 goals in 58 appearances for the Fir Park club, this morning which was rejected out of hand.

Manager David Moyes returned with an improved offer later in the day and it was accepted.

However, Everton now face a race against time to tie up his signature before this evening's deadline.

"Everton have agreed a deal with Motherwell over the transfer of James McFadden," said chief executive Michael Dunford.

"Hopefully the transfer will be completed before today's 5pm deadline."
