McEvoy set to rule in the Classic

One down and one to go. That was the message from one of the rising stars of British racing today as Kerrin McEvoy looked forward to riding Rule of Law in Saturday's Betfair St Leger.

McEvoy joined the powerful Godolphin team as No 2 to Frankie Dettori earlier this year with the twin ambitions of winning a Group 1 race and securing a top mount in a Classic.

Target one was achieved yesterday when the Australian youngster landed the Grosser Preis Von Vaden aboard Clive Brittain's Warrsan, and McEvoy can hardly wait for the Doncaster showpiece after partnering Rule of Law in a gallop at Newmarket this morning.

"It was a nice steady piece of work, but he felt in great shape and has definitely matured since earlier in the year. Now I've won a Group 1 in Europe a Classic would be a great way to top the season off, and the way Rule of Law is shaping up everything is pointing to a really good run."

News that Sir Michael Stoute could reroute his Yorkshire Oaks winner Quiff to Sunday's Prix Vermeille at Longchamp caused bookmakers to re-jig their Leger prices today, with Corals trimming Rule of Law from 11-4 to outright favourite at 9-4.

Spokesman David Stevens said: "Even without Frankie on board, Rule of Law now looks likely to go off favourite. Godolphin have won the Leger three times in recent years."

Meanwhile, Richard Quinn returns from a five-week lay off caused by knee problems at Lingfield tomorrow with his batteries recharged and the promise of a third Leger success aboard Let The Lion Roar.
