Michael Vaughan can be key man, says Andrew Strauss

Andrew Strauss believes Michael Vaughan's experience as an Ashes-winning captain could give England a crucial edge this summer.

Vaughan will play for the MCC in a four-day game against champions Durham at Lord's starting tomorrow, knowing that an impressive start to the season would leave him in pole position for the No3 spot against Australia.

And while Strauss warned the former skipper he must hit form for Yorkshire before he can be considered for his country, the England captain knows how important Vaughan could be in the fight to win back the urn.

Vaughan has not played for England since quitting as captain last August, but Strauss said: "He could bring a huge amount of experience as someone who has led England to the Ashes. It would be fantastic to have his name in the mix.

"He has a proven pedigree as an international cricketer, so if he's playing well, he could strengthen our team quite significantly.

"He knows as well as anyone he needs to get early-season runs, but if he does that, he'll be in contention."
