Millwall want Whelan to fill striker's role

Millwall are in talks with Middlesbrough over a shortterm deal for Noel Whelan.

The former Leeds striker is out of favour at the Riverside and spent part of last season on loan at Crystal Palace.

Boro manager Steve McClaren said: "I believe Noel is talking with Millwall, possibly with a view to a loan deal, or a year-long contract."

Mark McGhee has pledged to sign at least one new player this week and Whelan would provide cover for injured striker Mark McCammon.

Meanwhile, new loan signing Juan made his debut as Millwall twice came from behind to draw 2-2 with Southampton. The Brazilian defender, 21, who has been borrowed for three months from Arsenal, played 74 minutes at the Den yesterday.

Neil Harris struck twice to give the Lions a deserved draw against the Premiership side, who went ahead either side of the break through Brett Ormerod and Anders Svensson.
