Monty plays the waiting game

13 April 2012

Colin Montgomerie said today he may still be forced to pull out of the Ryder Cup in two weeks because of a sore back despite a final round of 67 in the German Linde Masters tournament.

His five-under-par 67 gave him a final total of 16 under 272 - six shots behind winner Stephen Leaney, of Australia.

Montgomerie said he he'll make his final decision about the Ryder Cup next week during the American Express Championship in Ireland.

The Scot said: "My gut feeling is I'm going, but I'll make a decision next week. If I can't play five times for Sam Torrance, I'm not going. The pain is tiring. To be honest I was just practicing out there for the Ryder Cup."

Ryder Cup co-captain Ian Woosnam said Montgomerie's constant change of mind could hurt the European team.

"He says that all the time but he'll be there," Woosnam said. "It's not good for the team's preparations."

Leaney's victory gave him a five-year exemption on the European tour, just months before his exemption was set to expire.

Local favourite Alex Cejka shot a final round of 68 to finish one shot behind Leaney while Woosnam (68) and Englishmen Nick Dougherty (66) and Paul Casey (71) tied for third at 20-under-par - two shots behind Leaney.
