Motorways set for football chaos

13 April 2012

Tens of thousands of football fans will cram on to the motorways before and after Sunday's FA Cup semi-finals in Birmingham and Manchester.

The staggered kick off times - Arsenal play Middlesbrough in Manchester at 4pm and Chelsea face Fulham at Villa Park at 7pm - should prevent problems on the way to the games.

However, the journey back to the capital could be dreadful as supporters join the traditionally heavy Sunday traffic heading south on the M6 and M1.

These are the hot spots to watch out for . . .

M6 Jct 6, Birmingham (Spaghetti Junction): Exit slip road closed from the M6 northbound to the northbound A38, but traffic can still go southbound onto the A38(M).

Between Jct 6 and Jct 7 (Great Barr & Birmingham North, A34): Major roadworks with three narrow lanes both ways and speed restrictions.

Between Jct 18 and Jct 19 (Holmes Chapel and Knutsford): Resurfacing and bridge works.
