Mourinho backing for Becks

12 April 2012

Jose Mourinho insists David Beckham can be the inspiration to turn around the Los Angeles Galaxy's fortunes in Major League Soccer.

Beckham played the last 13 minutes as Mourinho's Chelsea handed the Galaxy their second defeat in a row at the World Series of Football with a 1-0 win at the Home Depot Center.

"I think Beckham will not just be a fellow player for them but also an inspiration," said Mourinho. "Maybe they've found in David the inspiration to improve."

On Beckham's late cameo in the game decided by John Terry's 49th-minute goal, the Chelsea boss suggested the former England captain had little left to prove in the game but could make things happen to widen the appeal of the sport in the United States.

Mourinho added: "He played 10 minutes, 15 minutes. I think the objective was just for him to be on the pitch and to give the people what they were waiting for. That was very, very important, to have him on the pitch.

"I don't think we need to analyse his performance. He performed for 10 years at the highest level in Europe, so I can imagine in the US it will be very easy for him to perform - and to make the difference, to make soccer better and Americans more in love with the sport.

"That's what everybody's waiting for and, for me, he's the one to do that. He's the one to make that contribution in the US."
