Rafael Nadal arrived in London on Monday as the new world number one following his French Open triumph.

The Spaniard, who is playing in the AEGON Championships at Queen's Club this week, overtook Roger Federer thanks to his final victory over Robin Soderling on Sunday.

Nadal previously spent nearly a year at number one before losing top spot to his great rival after he was unable to defend his Wimbledon title through injury.

Federer's demotion means he remains one week behind Pete Sampras' record of 286 weeks on top of the ATP rankings.

Soderling's run to his second consecutive final at Roland Garros lifted him one place to fifth, 600 points behind Andy Murray.

Semi-finalists Tomas Berdych and Jurgen Melzer both made significant improvements, the Czech climbing four spots to 13th while Austrian Melzer is up 11 at number 16.

Surprise women's champion Francesca Schiavone rocketed up 11 places to sixth in the world, her first time inside the top 10.

The Italian's first grand slam title lifted her above final opponent Sam Stosur, who remains at seven.

The top five remain unchanged, meaning Serena and Venus Williams stay at one and two, while the big losers are last year's finalists Svetlana Kuznetsova and Dinara Safina.

Deposed champion Kuznetsova drops from sixth to 19th, one place ahead of her fellow Russian.
