Andy Murray hurries to win in Monte Carlo

17 April 2012

Andy Murray made a flying start to his clay court season today, beating Serbia’s Viktor Troicki in straight sets at the Monte Carlo Masters.

Murray needed just 67 minutes to settle the second-round encounter, winning 6-0, 6-3 to set up a clash with either Julien Benneteau or Jurgen Melzer.

“It was a good start,” said Murray, who enjoyed his best-ever clay court season last year, getting to the French Open semi-finals.

“Normally it takes me a few matches to get used to the clay but today I thought I moved well from the start and that is important. I felt comfortable and I used a lot of variety in my shots. Confidence is a big thing in tennis and I came in feeling a lot more comfortable.

“It’s a different type of game on this surface. You have to have a lot of patience on clay. Sometimes you need to play three or four great shots to win points.”

Great shots were much in evidence as Murray won 14 points without reply to take the opening set in just 27 minutes.

Troicki got on the board as he held at the start of the second set but the Scot soon resumed control.
