Another Woods takes a major step forward

When you’re a golfer named Woods, a lot is expected of you.

So Cheyenne Woods — niece of 14‑time Major champion Tiger — coped admirably with the pressure on her US Women’s Open debut, even if her round failed to measure up to the best days of her uncle.

Daughter of Earl Woods Jnr, Tiger’s older brother, the 21-year-old has just turned pro. She shot a three-over 75 in the first round at Blackwolf Run in Kohler, Wisconsin, where temperatures hit 38°C.

“It’s a tough course and I’m just glad to have survived,” she said. “I’m a little drained after that round but I’m excited to be here. He [Tiger] has always been supportive of my career and excited that I’m taking this next step.”

Woods (above) is six shots off the lead shared by Americans Brittany Lincicome, Cristie Kerr and Lizette Salas.
