Phil Mickelson’s still pinching himself

31 July 2013

It is10 days since Phil Mickelson won The Open but the world No2 still cannot believe his triumph.

The tournament has never been one of his favourites as he floundered in the wind and rain, struggled in the heather and high weeds, and fell apart while others made late charges.

In fact, Mickelson’s appearance at Muirfield was his 20th attempt at winning the Claret Jug and in his previous bids he had only twice finished in the top 10.

But that all changed this time as he came from five strokes back to claim his fifth Major.

“It has been so difficult for me to play my best golf in The Open under the conditions they usually have,” he said. “For me, winning it is the greatest accomplishment I could ever get in my career.

“[I’ll never forget] all the things that happened on that back nine.”

After a week off, the American plays the Bridgestone Invitational a the Firestone Country Club, starting tomorrow as he prepares for next week’s US PGA Championship at Oak Hill.

He said: “There’s an opportunity to add to this year and make it every bit as special as it can be.”

Meanwhile, Turnberry will stage the Women’s British Open for only the second time in the championship’s history in 2015.
