Pirelli’s U-turn after tyre row hots up again

3 July 2013

Pirelli motorsport director Paul Hembery has back-tracked after initially appearing to criticise the Formula One teams for Sunday’s British Grand Prix chaos.

Pirelli cited four reasons for the blow-outs; incorrect reverse mounting of the rear tyres, adoption by the teams of too-low pressures, extreme camber settings made by the teams and aggressive kerbing at Silverstone.

Crucially, Hembery said: “I’d like to re-emphasise the fact the 2013 range of tyres, used in the correct way, is completely safe.”

That was taken to mean that the teams were to blame but just 90 minutes Hembery clarified his comments adding: “In no way are we intending to create arguments or attack anybody.”
