Stephen Hendry plea for Ronnie O’Sullivan to carry on

8 May 2012

Stephen Hendry today urged Barry Hearn to act after snooker’s new world champion Ronnie O’Sullivan said he was considering quitting.

O’Sullivan has backed down from similar threats in the past but the 36-year-old says the expansion of the Tour to 27 events has made him think again.

After claiming his fourth world title with an 18-11 victory over Ali Carter at The Crucible last night the 36-year-old said: “There’s still a bit more in the tank for me in snooker but certain people need to start doing the right thing. I’m prepared to work hard but I just want to be treated fairly and I think the top players need to be treated fairly.”

Hendry, 43, retired after losing in the quarter-finals and hopes World Snooker chief Hearn ensures O’Sullivan does not follow suit.

The seven-time champion told the BBC: “As much as what Barry says is true, that no player is bigger than the game, all over the world Ronnie is seen as the hot ticket — any tournament without the best player in the world is devalued.”
