Tiger Woods's praise for Rory McIlroy as world No1 takes lead again

7 September 2012

Rory McIlroy today continued his fine form to grab a four-way share of the lead in the first round of the BMW Championship in Indiana.

The world No1 was joined on eight-under-par by Canada’s Graham DeLaet and American duo Bo van Pelt and Webb Simpson.

McIlroy, who won the Deutsche Bank Open last weekend, said: “I took advantage of hitting the ball really well, hitting it in the fairway, which I need to do, and also hitting it long, which gave me a lot of opportunities.

“I missed a few but was able to make the most of them. With the soft conditions, you could really shoot a number out there.”

McIlroy’s playing partner Tiger Woods is one shot behind the leaders, alongside England’s Luke Donald and Fiji’s Vijay Singh.

Woods said: “You can see that in the next decade or so, as Rory really matures and understands some of the nuances of the game, he’s only going to get better. And that’s fun to see.

“He’s a nice kid, he really is. It’s fun to play with him, he’s just an amazing talent. You watch him swing, watch him putt and play — he doesn’t have many weaknesses.

“This is the next generation of guys. The game of golf is in great hands with him, he’s here to stay.”
